What this work usually costs

Typical ranges for Toms River & Ocean County, NJ. None of it is a quote.

Every figure below is a typical range for commercial work in this part of New Jersey, gathered from 2026 refrigeration pricing sources and adjusted for a coastal labour market. None of it is a quote, and none of it is an assessment of your equipment. Two identical walk-ins on the same street can produce very different invoices.

The four things that actually move the number

  • What failed. A gasket set and a compressor are three orders of magnitude apart, and from outside the box they can look like the same fault.
  • Access. A ground-level condensing unit with room around it is a different job from the same unit on a roof behind a parapet, or in a downtown alley.
  • When you call. Emergency refrigeration work is routinely a multiple of the same job on a schedule. That is the strongest argument for a maintenance agreement there is, and it is arithmetic rather than salesmanship.
  • Where you are, in July. A call on Long Beach Island or in Seaside Heights in season crosses one bridge in changeover traffic. The same fault in April, on the mainland, is a cheaper call for reasons that have nothing to do with the fault.

A note on service call fees

Most commercial refrigeration contractors charge a diagnostic or call-out fee before any labour, and a premium for nights, weekends and holidays. That premium is what pays for somebody being available at 10pm on a Saturday in August, which is exactly when refrigeration fails. It is worth asking what it is before you need it, not after.

Breakdown and repair

WorkResponseTypical job cost
Walk-in cooler and freezer repair

The most common call on this site. Temperature climbing, ice where it should not be, or a unit that runs and runs and never pulls down.

Same day $450–$4,500 typical range, not a quote
Emergency and after-hours refrigeration service

Nights, weekends and holidays, when the cost is not the repair — it is the stock, and the hours the doors stay shut.

Same day $350–$2,500 typical range, not a quote
Commercial refrigeration compressor replacement

The expensive failure. Worth knowing what killed the old one before the new one goes in, or it happens again inside two years.

Same day $2,000–$9,000 typical range, not a quote
Refrigerant leak detection and repair

Topping a system up is not a repair. Finding the leak is, and what refrigerant now costs makes the difference obvious on the invoice.

Same day $600–$4,000 typical range, not a quote
Condenser and evaporator coil replacement

Salt air eats condenser coils. Within a few blocks of the ocean or the bay they can be gone in a fraction of their rated life.

Same day $900–$5,500 typical range, not a quote
Commercial ice machine service and replacement

Bars, delis, marinas and boardwalk stands live or die on ice in July. Machines that coast through winter fail on the first hot Saturday.

Same day $350–$4,000 typical range, not a quote
Reach-in, prep table and display case repair

The small self-contained equipment that quietly earns you a health-code violation: prep tables, merchandisers, back-bar coolers, deli cases.

Days $300–$2,200 typical range, not a quote
Defrost cycle, controls and electrical faults

Icing, short cycling, sensor faults and controllers that have drifted. Often the cheapest fix on this list, and the one most often misdiagnosed.

Days $350–$2,400 typical range, not a quote
Walk-in door, gasket and panel repair

Doors that will not latch, gaskets that no longer seal, panels gone soft. Small money that quietly raises every energy bill and every box temperature.

Days $250–$2,000 typical range, not a quote

Installation and replacement

WorkResponseTypical job cost
Walk-in cooler and freezer installation

A new box, or a replacement for one that has had its last repair. Sized, sited and drained properly, this is twenty-year equipment.

Scheduled $7,000–$25,000 typical range, not a quote
Remote condensing unit replacement

The outdoor half of the system. On this coast it usually dies before the box does, and replacing it is the chance to stop that repeating.

Scheduled $4,500–$18,000 typical range, not a quote
Refrigerated display case and merchandiser installation

Grab-and-go, deli, bakery and beverage merchandisers — supplied, sited, piped and commissioned so the air curtain actually works.

Scheduled $3,500–$20,000 typical range, not a quote
Walk-in beer cooler and draft dispensing systems

Beer walk-ins and long-draw draft systems. A shore bar in August is the hardest test a draft system ever gets.

Scheduled $2,500–$15,000 typical range, not a quote
Supermarket rack and parallel system work

Multi-compressor racks and parallel systems in supermarkets, kosher markets and larger convenience formats — service, circuit work and retrofit.

Scheduled $6,000–$60,000 typical range, not a quote
MAI

Maintenance, monitoring and compliance

WorkResponseTypical job cost
Planned refrigeration maintenance agreement

Scheduled visits with a written report each time. Planned refrigeration work is routinely a fraction of the cost of the same repair at 9pm on a Saturday.

Days $900–$6,000 per year, typical range, not a quote
Temperature monitoring and alarm systems

Sensors, alarms and retained temperature history — so a failure wakes somebody up instead of being discovered at opening.

Days $1,200–$8,000 typical range, not a quote
Refrigerant transition and R-22 retrofit

A survey and a plan for equipment on older refrigerants, so replacement happens on your schedule rather than on the day it finally lets go.

Scheduled $3,000–$25,000 typical range, not a quote
Refrigeration energy-efficiency retrofit

EC motors, LED case lighting, anti-sweat controls, night curtains and head-pressure control — the measures with a payback you can actually check.

Days $2,000–$12,000 typical range, not a quote
Refrigeration system assessment and second opinion

A written view of what you have, what it will cost to keep, and what to replace first — before anybody quotes you for a replacement.
